TRAINING IN HONEY PRODUCTION AND QUALITY CONTROL

As a continuation of the introductory training on honey processesing, Green and White Enterprise trained KTU staff on the honey processing culture and quality control, this took place on 13th November 2013. The training included the (“Dos’ and Don’ts”) and the use of a refractometer for measuring quality of honey and a sealer which is used to seal up the honey packaging jars. After the training, KTU declared its ability to produce and package the best quality honey.


 

MARKET MOTHERS ACQUIRE SKILLS IN LIQUID SOAP MAKING FOR NEW SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Ka Tutandike Uganda trained a group of 19 mothers from Kamwokya, Kalerwe, Gaba and Ndejje markets on production skills for liquid soap, on 14th November 2013. The objective of the training was to empower the mothers with alternative income generating skills, to enable them take care of their children and households better. The training was facilitated by Ms. Ruth Mugyenyi and every member got an opportunity for a hands experience in liquid soap making.

On completion of the training, the mothers took home a sample of the soap they had produced. The sample was also intended to inspire other women in the markets to engage in different alternative income generating activities, to boost their income levels.

 

 

KTU INTRODUCES THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE TO YOUTHS WITH DISABILITY IN MASAKA

KTU CEO, Susan Kisitu, the Programme Coordinator and Finance Manager travelled on a field visit to Masaka at the end of October. Masaka is one of the districts in which KTU is implementing Social Enterprise Projects with disabled youths, in partnership with Masaka Local Government. During the visit, we followed up and agreed on Social Enterprise Projects with the different Associations - Good Samaritan School for the deaf; Bwanda School for the deaf; Masaka School for children with special needs and another group of 15 disabled youth.

KTU WINS 2013 ‘INSPIRATIONAL’ PROJECT AWARD!

KTU was one of the 10 finalists selected from 570 submissions from 62 countries that were invited to present at the 2013 Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World Awards. Project Inspire is a joint initiative by the Singapore Committee for UN Women and MasterCard, to inspire young change makers and help them create a better world of opportunities for women and girls in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. KTU was represented by Susan Asio, the Programme Coordinator.We were nominated for our “Establishing Sustainable Bee Keeping Projects for Young Women with Disabilities” project, which won a 10,000 USD Award for “Best Inspirational Project.

KTU PARTICIPATES IN THE ANNUAL UGANDA MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION (UMA) TRADE SHOW.

During the month of October, KTU participated in a two week exhibition organized by the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA). Under the leadership of Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL), an Umbrella Organisation that brings together different women entrepreneurs in Uganda, KTU exhibited items produced by our beneficiary association groups. The items included; crafts, African jewellery, organic farm products and KTU honey. KTU used this as a platform to introduce the Organization’s social enterprise programme to the public and to different entrepreneurs. KTU’s products attracted a great number of buyers and potential business partners.


 

 

KTU OPENS HONEY PROCESSING UNIT.

KTU processed and produced its first bunch of honey on 30th September. The honey was packed by Bwiire Edgar and Christine - both young people with disabilities and employed by KTU, as honey processing technicians. KTU honey is now available at the KTU offices. KTU LED TRAINING ON BEE KEEPING AND HONEY PROCESSING

Ka Tutandike Uganda organized successful two-day training in honey processing and bee keeping in September, at the KTU office. The training was carried out in partnership with Green and White enterprises - experts in bee keeping and honey processing. In attendance were all KTU staff, deaf youth from Masaka and the different KTU beneficiary association representatives from Kalerwe, Ggaba, Nakawa and Kamwokya markets. The training covered areas from learning about different varieties of bees, to honey harvesting, processing and packing and the marketing after production.


 

 

KTU EMPLOYS DISABLED YOUTH AS HONEY PROCESSING TECHNICIANS.

In the process of setting up KTU’s honey production social enterprise, KTU hired two disabled youth, Kakai Christine and Bwiire Edgar, as honey processing technicians. This was based on the continued desire to empowering disabled youth further, after having provided them with skills through our recently concluded disability project. It is our hope that organisations become more inclusive in providing employment opportunities for the disabled


 

KA TUTANDIKE UGANDA HOSTS THE EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) THEMATIC GROUP MEETING

Ka Tutandike Uganda hosted the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Thematic Group working meeting, organised by The Forum for Education NGOs in Uganda (FENU) on 20August 2013. These meetings are held quarterly, by different ECD actors in Uganda, to share best practices and brainstorm on how in partnership, all ECD actors can play a role in ensuring the implementation of the ECD Policy in Uganda. The team also discussed issues for advocacy to inclusion in the reviewed Education & Sports Sector Review (ESSR) such as a phased government commitment to helping to fund community ECD centres, a separate pre-primary department with appropriate funding, an ECD focal point officer in every District and streamlining of pre-primary teacher education. The coalition pledged to continue following up these issues, for inclusion.


 

ASHOKA YOUTH INITIATIVE MENTORS YOUTH TO BECOME CHANGE MAKERS

On 13July 2013, Ka Tutandike Uganda and its 10 selected youth participated in Ashoka’s youth venture inspire event. The event was aimed at providing mentorship to Ugandan youth between the ages 12-22. Ka Tutandike Uganda was able to exhibit as well as partner with different mentors from Kenya and a few selected Ugandan NGOs, to mentor the selected youths across Uganda, on how to grow their ideas of creating social change in their communities. KTU will continue to work hand in hand with Ashoka’s youth venture initiative to inspire change makers in the communities it operates.
