KA TUTANDIKE HAS A NEW HOME

This year in January  Ka Tutandike Uganda moved offices from Plot 39 Bukoto - Street to its new address at Plot 1618 Bukoto- Kisasi Road, Kampala. The new premises are spacious and have enough space to host meetings as well as training sessions. What is most exciting about the new premises is the fact that is now able to set up demonstration gardens to demonstrate our skills in Organic farming. The team is extremely happy with the new office and especially since they now have a permanent place from where to train its beneficiaries in organic farming and initiate the development of a social enterprise.

KTTUK TRUSTEES APRIL VISIT

The Chair and Trustee of Ka Tutandike Trust UK (KKTUK) Heidi Kruitwagen visited Ka Tutandike Uganda office to provide input and support towards the finalization of KTU’s new strategic plan and programming.  Despite the short visit they managed to see the Women’ projects in Nakawa Market and Kamwokya Market where they witnessed the amazing results of the training the Women’s groups had earlier undertaken in Organic Farming. The Women proudly shared the fact that they are now earning an extra buck from selling fresh organically grown vegetables. Heidi and Anisha were able to see the results of empowerment that the women have gained when the women of Nakawa market showed them their gardens in Naguru and are now in the process of lobbying for more farm space with other potential partners to enable them grow even more vegetables.

KA TUTANDIKE HELPING TO COMBAT URBAN POVERTY

Following on from its goal of improving the lives of children of women living in urban poverty, KTU carried out a 6 days training in organic farming, for mothers in Kamwokya market in February 2013.  The training was attended by 25 women from Kwagalana women’s group in Kamwokya Market; the majority of whom are living with HIV/AIDS. Despite their plight, they are determined to live their lives productively and provide a better life for their children. What was special about this training is the fact that this time it was facilitated by peers from the Umoja Women’s Group in Nakawa market, who had received a similar training facilitated by Ka Tutandike in 2010. The Umoja Women’s Group are now utilizing their skills in organic farming to empower other vulnerable market women in order to economically empower them to earn additional income from sales of the fruits and vegetables.  The training involved sessions in establishing low cost, compact ways of growing fruits and vegetables in limited spaces, and was intended to equip the market mothers with options for  nutritious foods so as to  improve the health of their children by preventing poor health related diseases such as malnutrition.

Following the training in organic farming supported  by KTU, Umojja Women’s Group over the last 2 years, its members have been very proactive and enterprising by utilizing these skills by starting up their own demonstration garden near their market environment.  With the cultivation of organic vegetables, they have now boosted their income significantly by supplying surrounding urban markets as well as improving their children’s diets. Basing Anita Hawa a member of the Umojja women’s group and our tour guide of the demonstration garden said and “I can finally sleep peacefully at night knowing that I have food in the morning for me and my family.”
