Katutandike - Let's Get Started - Transforming Lives in Uganda

KA TUTANDIKE HELPING TO COMBAT URBAN POVERTY

Following on from its goal of improving the lives of children of women living in urban poverty, KTU carried out a 6 days training in organic farming, for mothers in Kamwokya market in February 2013.  The training was attended by 25 women from Kwagalana women’s group in Kamwokya Market; the majority of whom are living with HIV/AIDS. Despite their plight, they are determined to live their lives productively and provide a better life for their children. What was special about this training is the fact that this time it was facilitated by peers from the Umoja Women’s Group in Nakawa market, who had received a similar training facilitated by Ka Tutandike in 2010. The Umoja Women’s Group are now utilizing their skills in organic farming to empower other vulnerable market women in order to economically empower them to earn additional income from sales of the fruits and vegetables.  The training involved sessions in establishing low cost, compact ways of growing fruits and vegetables in limited spaces, and was intended to equip the market mothers with options for  nutritious foods so as to  improve the health of their children by preventing poor health related diseases such as malnutrition.
