KTU INTRODUCES THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE TO YOUTHS WITH DISABILITY IN MASAKA

KTU CEO, Susan Kisitu, the Programme Coordinator and Finance Manager travelled on a field visit to Masaka at the end of October. Masaka is one of the districts in which KTU is implementing Social Enterprise Projects with disabled youths, in partnership with Masaka Local Government. During the visit, we followed up and agreed on Social Enterprise Projects with the different Associations - Good Samaritan School for the deaf; Bwanda School for the deaf; Masaka School for children with special needs and another group of 15 disabled youth.

We also followed up on disabled youths, who had previously participated in “Beekeeping as a Business” Training organized by KTU, and conducted on 18th & 19th September, 2013. During the visit, we evaluated the practical utilization of the knowledge and skills the young men and women received from the training. We were impressed to find that the group had set up local bee hives in one of their member’s compounds; in addition, one of the youths, Nicholas Steven, a carpenter by profession was in the process of assembling local bee hives which he was making out of timber. We additionally met with two district leaders for people with disabilities, Mr. Michael Miiro and Ms. Nakaggwa, whom we engaged to continue supporting the group of disabled youth in developing sustainable social enterprise concepts which KTU will support them achieve.
