Uganda National Coalition for the Deaf (UNCD) submits recommendations to Uganda’s new Special Needs Education (SNE) Policy

Following the National Symposium on Education of the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Child in Uganda held from 15 - 17 August at Munyonyo resort in Kampala, Ka Tutandike was invited to meet with the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon. Syda Bbumba on 18 August as well as the Ministers of State for Elderly and Disability and for Higher Education Hon. Sulaiman Madada and Hon. John C. Muyingo respectively.
This meeting was very fruitful and amongst the promising outcomes was the fact that Government agreed to the request by Ka Tutandike to enable the Uganda Coalition of organization working on Deafness (UNCD) to provide input in to the draft Special Needs Education (SNE) Policy for Uganda.  Ka Tutandike was also requested to send two representatives to the Government meetings that will be held shortly on how best to capture data on individual disabilities in the national census next year.  This early and positive response clearly signals their commitment to engage meaningfully with civil society via the Uganda National Coalition for the Deaf.  As the lead organisation for UNCD, Ka Tutandike Uganda is delighted with this dynamic development and has now submitted input to the draft SNE policy for Government consideration.

Present at the meeting were Mr. Christopher W. Okecho (Assistant Commissioner for Special Need Education - Ministry of Education & Sports) Ms. Beatrice Kaggya (Assistant Commissioner for Elderly and Disability Affairs - Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development), Mr. Aloysius Kiribaki (Development Manager, Sense International and member of UNCD). Ka Tutandike was represented by Christine Semambo Sempebwa (CEO/Ka Tutandike Uganda), Anisha Rajapakse (Programme and Partnership Manager/Ka Tutandike Trust UK), Heidi Kruitwagen (Chairperson of Board of Trustees/Ka Tutandike Trust UK ) and Julius Nkuraija  (Programme Manager/Ka Tutandike Uganda)
