Katutandike - Let's Get Started - Transforming Lives in Uganda

Ka Tutandike trains children and teachers in book making

The promotion of reading for pleasure, as illustrated by this activity goes beyond engaging children in day to day reading activities to having them make their own reading materials. The reading materials i.e. books which are meant to be kept as diaries have been made with the teachers and pupils from Primary three (P.3) to Primary seven (P.7), in each of the three implementing Schools. In order to ensure sustainability and easy knowledge transfer, the books were made using local materials i.e. pieces of sack, a few sheets of photocopying paper and some string (from the sack), needles and a knife. Each child that made the diary took it home and will write about anything they would like to share: their families, their favourite class, things that have made them happy or sad. Once all the pages are filled, the diaries will take pride of place in a special area of the school's libraries, where parents, other children and even members from the community can come and read them.

Both teachers and pupils alike have really enjoyed this activity. Not only has it given the children an opportunity to develop their writing skills, but the practical skill of book-making may well come in useful: many families may not have the money to buy notebooks for their children, so this is an excellent alternative.

Reading is fun and such activities help to bring the fun alive for not only the children but the teachers too.
